PaxDei - Player Character - Layered Wearables - 2024

Layered costume system for player character

PaxDei is a massive multiplayer game that has ambitious artistic goals for Character Art. To create an authentic medieval feel for our game characters we wanted to support costume layering and allow freedom for costume design. For instance, allowing loosely fitted costumes was a part of the visual progression system early on as medieval peasant clothing was a more loose design in comparison to more finely designed and crafted aristograph clothing. Medieval clothing consisted of multiple layers of clothing. These design requirements created a need to support multiple layers of costumes and armor combined with a vast variety of designs, volumes and shapes. To add complexity, all the costume layers were required to be combinable with any other costume layer. We also wanted to give the player a possibility to modify the body shape. One of the key elements of this costume layer system is using automated standardized correctives processed by Houdini tool which is integrated as a part of the Maya character pipeline.

This tool was made to standardize the multi-layer system for costumes. It inputs any shape and creates correctives per layer type. The .hda is integrated to Maya pipeline.
